    • Next intake

      14 February 2028

    • Duration

      2 semesters

    • Class days

      Monday to Friday

The two-semester Full-Time Preparatory Courses in Art and Design provide a comprehensive foundation in these subjects, preparing you for further study. The programme is designed for applicants with little or no previous experience in art and design, as well as those looking to develop and expand their existing skills. After completing a range of foundation modules in the first semester, you can select modules according to your individual interests in the second semester. Admission to the Preparatory Courses in Art and Design requires successful completion of the admissions process and being at least 18 years old. Completion of upper secondary education or vocational training is recommended.

    • First-semester programme

During your first semester, you will build a solid foundation in art and design, become familiar with the field and discover where your strengths and interests lie.

Fundamentals of Art and Design 1 & 2

You will develop essential drawing and painting skills, as well as proficiency in object and spatial design, visual communication and photography. Through hands-on experimentation, you will explore the characteristics, possibilities and modes of expression of different media. Along the way, you will learn a variety of techniques and design processes, developing your own creative approach in the process.

Fundamentals of Art and Design 3 – Time-Based Design

This module provides an introduction to gaming, interaction design, moving images and animation. By working with motion, time, and interaction as design tools, you will discover new ways of creating and communicating ideas. Through practical exercises, you experiment with different techniques and media to bring your concepts to life, learning how movement, image, sound and interaction work together in the process.

      Interdisciplinary Projects

You will collaborate across different design areas and connect knowledge from multiple disciplines. These projects encourage you to think, plan and create within broader contexts, helping you to develop a more holistic design perspective.

      Lectures

Over eight weeks, you attend two lectures per week. Professionals from the fields of art and design share insights into their careers, creative practices and industry experience. Additional information sessions from various universities will help you to explore future study opportunities and pathways.

      Mentored Project

By the end of the semester, you will have completed an independent project under the guidance of experienced mentors. Starting from a given theme, you will decide on your own approach, methods and final outcome. Regular colloquia provide opportunities for feedback and reflection, and a public exhibition allows you to present your work to a wider audience.

    • Second-semester programme

During your second semester, you will prepare for your chosen field of study by developing specialist skills, fostering independence and honing critical thinking abilities. A range of elective modules allows you to shape your learning experience according to your interests and goals.

      Specialist Projects

You will choose two projects from areas such as drawing and painting, object and spatial design, visual communication, film and photography, or digital media. Working on both projects simultaneously, you will take responsibility for the entire design process, from initial concept to final outcome. You receive subject-specific guidance and support along the way, and introductory exercises help you develop effective working methods and deepen your specialist knowledge.

      Skills Weeks

During five dedicated Skills Weeks, you can choose from a variety of one- or two-week elective modules running concurrently. These modules enable you to reinforce existing skills, learn new techniques and delve into practical design areas that transcend project-based learning. You will gain valuable hands-on experience and expand your creative toolkit further.

      Mentored Project

You will complete the preparatory year with an independent mentored project. You decide on the medium, format and final outcome, which gives you the freedom to pursue your own creative interests and strengths. Supported by a team of two lecturers who are experts in your chosen area, you will develop and realise your project through a guided process. Colloquia provide opportunities for discussion and reflection, and a public exhibition offers you the chance to present your work to a wider audience.

      Portfolio Course

After the third semester, you can take part in a four-week Portfolio Course. Here, you will refine and present your work, preparing a strong portfolio for your next academic or professional step.
