Application and preparation

What are the Preparatory Courses in Art and Design, and who are they suitable for? These courses provide a foundation-level education in art and design, preparing you for further studies in these fields. They are open to anyone aged 18 or over, with or without previous experience in art and design. While a high school diploma (Matura) or vocational qualification (EFZ) is advantageous for subsequent degree studies, it is not required for admission to the courses.

Are the Preparatory Courses in Art and Design the same as a foundation course? Yes. In Switzerland, the terms 'Propädeutikum' and 'Vorkurs' are often used interchangeably. Both refer to a foundation programme designed to prepare students for higher education in art and design.

What are the admission requirements? Applicants must demonstrate an interest in art and design and be motivated. They must also successfully complete the admissions procedure and be at least 18 years old.

How often can I apply for the Preparatory Courses in Art and Design? There is no limit. You may apply as many times as you wish.

What are the requirements for applying to the shortened full-time Preparatory Courses in Art and Design?

    • Academic high school diploma (Matura) with a specialization in Visual Arts
    • Specialized Matura in the field of Art
    • Completed vocational training with a professional baccalaureate in a creative field
    • Completed vocational training in a design-related profession
    • Academic high school diploma (Matura) plus documented artistic or creative practice of at least six months (internship or professional experience)

Which previous qualifications are recognized for admission to a Bachelor's degree programme? Certain vocational qualifications are already recognized as equivalent to a foundation-level education in art and design when applying for degree programmes. Recognition depends on the chosen programme and the respective university or university of applied sciences.

When do the Preparatory Courses in Art and Design start? Each of the three study models begins only once per year: the full-time and part-time programmes start in August, while the shortened full-time programme starts in February.

Do I need a portfolio for the admission procedure? No. For the application, it is sufficient to submit a portfolio containing approximately eight to ten examples of your own creative work. It does not need to be professionally designed or laid out.

In which language is the course taught? Classes are conducted primarily in German. A German language level of B2 is recommended.

Are scholarships or financial support available? Yes, depending on your canton of residence. If you are eligible for a scholarship in the Canton of Zurich, you will benefit from reduced semester fees, as the canton will cover part of the training costs. Depending on your canton of residence, other educational grants or scholarships may also be available.

Can I work while attending the Preparatory Courses in Art and Design? For students enrolled in the full-time or shortened full-time programmes, regular employment is only possible to a limited extent. During the spring semester, Fridays are generally free of classes and can be used for independent study or part-time work. The part-time programme can be combined very well with employment or other responsibilities, as classes take place on Fridays and Saturdays.
