Course content and everyday student life

How long do the Preparatory Courses in Art and Design last? Depending on the study model, the programme lasts one semester (Shortened Full-Time Preparatory Courses in Art and Design), two semesters (Full-Time Preparatory Courses in Art and Design), or three semesters (Part-Time Preparatory Courses in Art and Design).

What will I learn? During the initial stage of the course, you will develop essential skills in subjects such as drawing, painting, object design, photography, visual communication and time-based media. Students enrolled on the shortened full-time programme skip this phase due to their prior qualifications and experience. Afterwards, the programme is mainly project-based, enabling you to work across a wide range of design disciplines and select modules according to your interests.

Are there exams, grades, or project assessments? There are no grades and no traditional exams. The focus is on creative projects, regular feedback, and the continuous development of your work. By the end of the Preparatory Courses in Art and Design, you will have built up a strong portfolio of projects to support your application to a university-level art and design programme.

Where do the Preparatory Courses in Art and Design take place? Classes and studio spaces are located at the Toni-Areal campus, alongside the Bachelor's and Master's programmes at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). This proximity provides insight into everyday student life at ZHdK and offers opportunities to connect with students and lecturers.

How is portfolio development supported? To support you in developing and refining your portfolio for degree programme applications, an additional portfolio course is offered each January.
