Students from a non-EU/EFTA country who can enter Switzerland without a visa or who already hold a valid Schengen residence permit generally do not require a type “D” entry visa. Instead, they must obtain a so-called “confirmation of residence permit” (Zusicherung der Aufenthaltsbewilligung).
This confirmation should be requested 2–3 months before entering Switzerland from the migration office of the canton where the student intends to live. The same documents are usually required as for students who need a visa.
After entering Switzerland, students must register with the local municipality within the required timeframe. The residence permit is issued after registration. Studying in Switzerland is only possible with a valid residence permit (see checklist for students with visa-free entry or a valid Schengen residence permit, PDF, and FINMA list, PDF).
