Swiss University Centre for Music Physiology (SHZM)

Music physiology activities at Switzerland’s music universities have proven to be seminal at international conferences. The idea of bringing together the existing skills of the different Swiss university departments in a joint university centre – the Swiss University Centre for Music Physiology (SHZM)  – arose from discussions between the involved lecturers. Objectives:

  • Cooperation between the Swiss music universities in the areas of music physiology and musicians’ medicine under the auspices of the Conference of Swiss Universities of Music (CSUM)
  • Support for the CAS and MAS continuing education degree programmes in music physiology at ZHdK
  • Organization of Switzerland-wide further education courses in music physiology and music medicine
  • Promotion of musico-physiological teaching and research in cooperation with the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology and universities in Switzerland and abroad
  • Representation of Swiss music universities at international music physiology and music medicine conferences and in professional journals

Networking with music schools and conservatories

In conjunction with its university programmes, ZHdK has worked with the Association of Swiss Music Schools (VZM) to develop continuing education courses that also provide an insight into ZHdK’s extra-occupational continuing education degree programmes in music physiology.
The music physiology continuing education offering for music schools and conservatories can also be viewed via the Music Physiology Centre ZHdK and is continuously updated. Moreover, it is possible to gain certification as a “health-promoting music school”.
