    Alexander Nanau

    Alexander Nanau

      Alexander Nanau is an Academy Award® and BAFTA® nominee and European Film Award winner, director, cinematographer, editor, and producer from Romania.  

      His early works include The World According to Ion B. (2009, International Emmy Award) and Toto and His Sisters (2014, San Sebastián, EFA nomination). As director of photography, he worked on Sonia Kronlund's Nothingwood (2017, Directors' Fortnight, Cannes).  

      His best-known film, Collective (2019), premiered at the Venice International Film Festival, was screened at TIFF and the Sundance Film Festival, and in 2021 became the first Romanian film ever to be nominated for an Oscar® in two categories: Best International Feature Film and Best Documentary Feature. The film also received the European Film Award for Best Documentary and the European Parliament's LUX Audience Award.  

      Nanau is a regular lecturer and mentor at international film schools and labs and a member of both the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the European Film Academy.
