Music physiology

Sustainability in research and teaching is a priority at ZHdK. For this reason, the university is home to one of the world’s largest music physiology teaching, consultation, research and continuing education programmes. After all, musicians trained in music physiology are healthier, happier and perform better.

Below you will find an overview of all music physiology programmes in teaching, consulting, research and continuing education.

About music physiology

Music physiology covers research and teaching on the processes that occur in the human body when making music. The most important objectives are:
—  Prevention and resolution of playing, singing and health issues
—  Physiological foundation in teaching and practicing concepts
—  Improvement of musicians’ motivation, self-confidence and performance level in an increasingly competitive environment

Musicians’ Medicine (Performing Arts Medicine) diagnoses and treats conditions experiences by musicians, and frequently has to develop interdisciplinary solutions. Being preliminary stages of diseases, the most frequent functional problems for instrumentalists and singers can usually still be resolved with special exercises.
The music physiology/music and preventive medicine section at ZHdK can draw on a network of therapists, doctors and neuroscientists where required.
