Music physiology research

Music physiology research projects

Research projects in the field of music physiology/music and preventive medicine take place at the Institute for Music Research of ZHdK, which also includes the Hand Laboratory of ZHdK, the Zurich Centre for Musicians’ Hands (ZZM).
Since 1999, over twenty music physiology research projects have been carried out at ZHdK, 10 of which were financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
Focal topics included:

  • Ergonomic studies, including EMG, 3D video, Biomechanical Hand Measurement (BHM) according to Wagner, and strength endurance measurements (cooperation with the University of Marburg, Germany)
  • Studies on the effectiveness of preventive teaching as well as learning and practising techniques, including neurological feedback in control group designs on students and teachers (cooperation with the universities of Freiburg and Mainz, Germany)
  • Inter-university epidemiological studies (including with the Universities of Zurich, Basel, Lucerne, Lausanne and Geneva)
  • Real-time psychophysiological studies on stage fright (cooperation with the Universities of Lausanne, Vienna, Fribourg and ETH Zurich and the University of Gothenburg, Sweden)
