The Department of Performing Arts and Film considers current transformations and the future viability of the arts to be central concerns of teaching and research. The disciplines of Dance, Theatre and Film share a strong capacity for hybrid collaborations, ensemble work and teamwork. The degree programmes enjoy an international reputation and are distinguished by the diversity of their offerings, which are taught in close proximity and in dialogue with one another, and explored through production- and research-oriented formats. The wide range of Minors enables students to develop their individual artistic profiles and build sustainable careers.

More than 350 students are enrolled in Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes at the Department. In addition, 80 talented children and young people are trained at the Zurich Dance Academy (Tanz Akademie Zürich) in preparation for careers as professional dancers. The Department has its own research institute and excellent facilities. As part of international networks, it provides an innovative and interdisciplinary environment for ambitious work in the performing arts, film and immersive arts.

Film, Dance and Theatre are the three disciplines of the Department. They combine distinct artistic perspectives with shared areas of inquiry and create opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Film – Cinematic storytelling and creative practice across a range of artistic and design disciplines. 
Dance – Artistic and professional training in classical and contemporary dance, as well as professional ballet training at the Zurich Dance Academy (taZ). 
Theatre – Acting, directing, scenography and theatre education in dialogue with contemporary theatre practice.

Research – The Institute for the Performing Arts and Film (IPF) brings together artistic and academic research in film, dance and theatre. Its work focuses on questions arising from artistic practice, which are further explored through research projects, collaborations and exchanges with teaching.

Artistic Practice and the Public – With Kino Toni, the Immersive Arts Space and Theater der Künste, the Department offers spaces for presenting, experimenting with and discussing artistic work. These venues are also integral to teaching and provide opportunities for encounters between students, artists and audiences.
