The Theatre course of study in the Department of Performing Arts and Film stands out through the great variety of Specializations it offers: Acting, Directing, Stage Design, Dramaturgy and Theatre Education are separate Specializations that are nevertheless closely interwoven with one another in the programmes. All are taught in a variety of production-oriented courses. The Theater der Künste (Theatre of the Arts) provides a professional setting for effectively putting the theories behind these Specializations into practice.
Bachelor of Arts in Theatre
The fields of practice covered in the Bachelor of Arts in Theatre are Acting, Directing, Theatre Education, Dramaturgy and Stage Design. The course provides students with the basic principles and skills in their relevant field of practice so they can find their way in what is a constantly changing environment for theatre professionals. The Bachelor’s degree lays the foundations for further creativity in all fields of the performing arts. Technical and artistic skills and capabilities are learned and practised in all manner of different ways. Students have the opportunity to test out how theatre can be developed creatively in disciplinary and interdisciplinary projects.
Master of Arts in Theatre
The Master of Arts in Theatre (MATch) offers a unique meeting ground for artists from various fields of theatre practice, such as dramaturgy, acting, theatre education, directing and scenography. MATch is based on an expanded notion of theatre, with a focus on experimental formats and aesthetically exploratory working methods.
MATch prioritizes collaborative and co-creative working processes and promotes artistic and theoretical exchange between the fields.
MATch brings together experienced artists, researchers and educators from diverse backgrounds so that they can jointly shape the content and methods of the programme.
MATch is aimed at people who wish to further professionalize and develop their engagement with theatrical or performative practices, regardless of professional or production-related constraints.
MATch facilitates the development of artistic-research projects within an interdisciplinary environment, supported by a wide range of courses and diverse teaching formats.
To promote the programme’s diversity and international character, teaching is primarily conducted in English.
