Correcting the Code: Women, Gender, Technology and the Transformation of Digital Art

correcting the code

Correcting the Code: Women, Gender, Technology and the Transformation of Digital Art is a public programme of exchange events, performative activations, and workshops, co-organized by HEK (House of Electronic Arts), Basel, and the Institute for Contemporary Art Research (IfCAR) at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).

From early computer-based experiments in the 1960s to today's networked, platform-based and AI-driven practices, digital technologies have transformed how art is produced, circulated, collected and preserved — yet the history of digital art still shows significant omissions, particularly the underrepresentation of feminist, collective and gender-marginalised practices. Across four thematic chapters — early histories of digital art, feminist manifestos, collective and community-based practices, and the gendered politics of artificial intelligence — the programme brings together artists, curators, theorists and researchers from science and technology studies for public exchange between artistic and non-artistic perspectives on technology, digital culture and gender. At its core, the programme asks: how can the history and future of digital art be rewritten to account for the practices, knowledge and infrastructures that have shaped it but been left out of its canon?

Programme conceived by Marie-France Rafael, Jeni Fulton and Asya Yaghmurian - in co-operaton with Sabine Himmelsbach and Marlene Wenger.
