Born in 1941 in Winterthur. His first two documentary films were banned but won multiple awards. In 1981, his narrative film “Das Boot ist voll” (“The Boat Is Full”) was honoured at the Berlin Film Festival and nominated for an Oscar. His film “More than Honey” is the most successful Swiss documentary of all time. His latest film, “Eldorado”, won the Bavarian Film Award and received several human rights prizes. Imhoof is a member of the Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts) in Berlin, the European Film Academy and AMPAS in Los Angeles.
