    «In your ideal world:
what role would dance play in society?»

We exist because the world is not ideal. The movement that the friction between me and the world creates, is the material I thrive to shape. Working in a field that is centered around the immediate experience of each other’s physicality is the loophole I feel home in. Offering views from this complex place while making their political explosiveness perceivable is where I want to migrate. When both artist and audience enjoy the creative exploration of the infinite languages bodies speak, magic happens. Because we practice for different worlds together.

In my ideal world dance and other art forms would be valued as “basic human tools” to cultivate our potential and to flourish as a society. There are things that can probably not be expressed in words, things that cannot be understood with the intellect. How can we inspire each other? How can we best express ideas, feelings, visions, fantasies? How can we continue exploring and discovering new dimensions and possibilities in life? Some people create beautiful poems, some inspiring paintings, and others create dance.

Dance doesn’t just allow us to connect with ourselves, however. Dancing also has a social aspect and gives us a chance to get to know others. Dance unites people of all ages and gives people from all over a common language. Above all, it brings people with different tastes and personalities together, all united by music and rhythm. Another thing about dance is that it is not competitive like sports, where you have to defeat somebody. With Dance, there is only the time spent watching something. There is just the experience of it, which I think is a very wise, profound and mature way of spending time. It is the art of observing rather than judging.

Body language is the origin of communication and in dance it is all about the body, which is something that we all possess. Dance is functional, it is a service, it has an aesthetic appeal and it is a means for people to express themselves in the most natural way. Dance connects people and societies. It awakens emotions and gives people the opportunity to discover new perspectives. It is a language we all speak. Dance is good for the body, the mind and society.
