This dissertation project seeks to develop a theory of artistic action as care. It draws on the aesthetic work of John Dewey as well as recent research at the intersection of art and care ethics (Saito 2022; Thompson 2023) to analyze the caring dimension of contemporary artistic practices from an action-theoretical perspective. I argue that caring and artistic action not only share structural similarities, but that a pragmatist conception of artistic action – brought into dialogue with current artistic practices – reveals that art itself can be understood as a form of care.
