There is a two-stage process:
After a preliminary selection (application videos and portfolio), the examination board (main subject lecturers and major programme directors or their representatives) decides on a selection of candidates who will be invited to Zurich for the aptitude test.
The examination comprises three sections:
(Duration: sections one and two: 20 minutes / section three: 30 minutes)
- Performance of a repertoire of pieces
The candidates submit a list of works from different periods/styles (total duration: 30 minutes). The panel will listen to a selection. At least one piece must be performed from memory.
Total length of 30 minutes. - Specific rules for majoring in piano:
Candidates are required to present four or more compositions, including a first movement of a classical sonata and an etude (Clementi, Cramer, Czerny, Chopin, Liszt or similar). - Specific rules for majoring in organ:
Sections one and two last 40 minutes. Performance of repertoire pieces: Candidates prepare a programme of approx. 30 min duration with works from different epochs/styles which they intend to perform at the examination, including at least one work of an advanced level of difficulty (e.g. J.S. Bach: BWV 542 or 548). The jury will listen to a selection. - Improvisation: will be examined in 2 parts:
- prepared: two chorale partitas on two stylistically different, self-selected chorales (e.g. baroque and neo-modal); the jury selects one of them.
- unprepared: Short improvisation on a task set directly at the examination (bible verse, chorale melody).
- Sight-Reading/Sight-Singing
Additionally to be brought to the examination: A repertoire list with all works that have been performed so far. - Pedagogy Preparation
Time: 30 minutes
Language: German
Candidates receive the sheet music for three prescribed pieces from the teaching materials 30 minutes before the exam and prepare to perform one of them and present the didactic, stylistic, formal, musical, technical and pedagogy aspects of the piece.

- Very good understanding of German language and mode of expression
- Vibrancy and precision of the performance
- Engaging with the standard of performance required by the piece and how this is communicated.
- Variety of ideas and ability to reflect
