For the "Kulturnacht Winterthur 2015" the color-light-center has developed a 16-angled tent construction made of translucent foil for the staging of the «color-light-haze». This translucent construction allows the observation of colors from two perspectives, from outside and from inside with surprising differences.
When entering the installation the visitors dive into a thick fog, which is illuminated with colored LED light. The optical boundaries dissolve and the architectural space seems to transcend into an infinite space. It is as if you are situated in the middle of a colored light cloud consisting of pure color without additional visual distractions. Due to a specific light programming the complex process of color perception and psychophysical changes can be experienced as such. It is possible to experience these phenomena almost physically and to rediscover the own seeing.
Thus after a short period of time intense green will appear less bright and less saturated as a result of the adaptation of the receptors of our eyes. If white light follows, it will be perceived as magenta, a color which is not physically present. Colored afterimages therefore are mixed with projected colors resulting in new and transient color impressions.
Entering the room when it is illuminated with white light these intense afterimages will not be perceived. When observing the light colors from outside they clearly appear different compared to the colors within the tent. Inside the colors soften in the course of time and will initially be superimposed with afterimages, while the same colors when viewed from outside seem to remain constant. Therefore the question of objectivity of perception in general arises.
In a later sequence the two halves of the space are illuminated with different colors, e.g. with blue and green light. Walking from one side to the other one can physically experience the continous additive mixture of two colors.
