Research data is all data produced during the research process, for example during measurements, surveys, source research or experiments. Digital research data, and its archiving and subsequent re-use, are becoming increasingly important to the planning and publication of research projects.

    Research Data at ZHdK

Academic conventions, and almost all funding bodies nowadays, require that not only the publications or works, materials and media created in artistic practice but also the data obtained in the course of the research process must be recorded systematically, made available to the public as far as possible and archived for the future so that they can be re-used again.

ZHdK supports researchers with all aspects of research data management and specifically addresses the requirements of artistic research. A comprehensive overview of all aspects of research data management, including a list of useful services and toods, can also be found at forschungsdaten.info.

    Open Science

Handling research data responsibly throughout the entire data lifecycle and archiving it based on the FAIR principles create the basis for Open Science, meaning scientific practice with the aim of making research data and reports accessible in a way that enables collaboration between researchers and reproducibility of research outcomes.

Careful management of research data not only guarantees that funding bodiesโ€™ conditions are met, it also ensures that data can be cited using persistent identifiers and referenced as evidence of researchersโ€™ and institutionsโ€™ achievements.

    Data management plan

A data management plan (DMP) structures the handling of the data produced in a research project โ€“ from submitting the project proposal to archiving the data when the project is finished. In this plan, the time frames for archiving the data and how it can be accessed and used again can be defined. A data management plan should be a โ€œlivingโ€ document that is amended constantly during the project.

ZHdKโ€™s data management plan is geared specifically towards the requirements of artistic research and the structures at the university. The list of questions also takes into account the specifications of funding bodies such as the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and can therefore serve as a template for submitting project proposals and funding applications.

Researchers at ZHdK are required to discuss their data management plan with the Archive during the project planning stage and to submit it when the project starts at the latest.
