    Applications conditions

Admission to the Transforming Environments programme is a two-stage process: the first year (predoc) focuses on developing the practice-based doctoral project and finding a suitable supervision situation between the DFA and a partner university. Upon successful completion of this process and enrolment at a partner university, PhD candidates become part of the PhD group.

    Application deadlines:

No new admissions are currently possible. The next call for applications is planned for spring 2027 at the earliest. Information on this will be communicated here in due course.

If you would like to be informed by e-mail about the next application opportunity, you are welcome to contact Laura von Niederhäusern to be added to the mailing list.

    Requirements and application documents:

We welcome applications from artists, curators and artistic researchers (MFA degree) with consistent practice and a compelling interest in working on and towards processes of social, political or ecological transformation. Please note that admission to the programme does not include fellowships or paid positions.

    Required application documents:

    • Personal video statement (3–5 minutes), including your artistic interests and motivation for doing an artistic PhD. The video can consist of a simple recording of you talking to the camera, or it can include footage that helps you communicate your position. Please upload your statement to vimeo and include the link in your project proposal.
    • Written project proposal (2 pages) that gives insight into the environments you are interested in and the process of involvement / research / production you intend to start.
    • Portfolio, including a CV and documentation of your most important work/projects from the last 5 years (max. 12 A4 pages)
    • Copy of your MFA-degree diploma
