Since 2012, it has been possible to pursue a doctoral project at the doctoral School for Scholarly Doctoral Studies (PhD) as part of a cooperation programme with the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG). Possible subject areas are historical musicology, music theory and church music studies, jazz and popular music research, aesthetics of music, ethnomusicology, theatre studies/dramaturgy, music education/instrumental and vocal pedagogy, and sound and music computing. The prerequisite for admission is the completion of a relevant Master's degree or diploma programme (see §1 of the curriculum) as well as successful completion of the relevant application procedure (admission interview with the doctoral committee). Doctoral students are each supervised by three supervisors from the ZHdK and/or the KUG. The result is a scholarly dissertation.
