    Course content.

BA in Theatre, Major in Scenography

Students delve into content-related design and research, develop and consolidate their individual artistic practices including aesthetic questions, and engage with contemporary art and theatre. Moreover, they learn various hands-on techniques, including how to use lighting and stage equipment, visualizations, model construction, video editing, photography, 3D printing, laser cutting, plan drawing and working with wood, metal, textiles, plastics, etc. all in the universityโ€™s in-house studios.

    BA in Theatre

Scenography is a major offered as part of the BA in Theatre along with three other specializations: Acting, Directing and Theatre Education. This degree programme interlinks the four major programmes, offers project-based teamwork, and a wide range of courses designed to develop your own artistic profile. By taking a practical approach, students benefit from an excellent infrastructure, professional network and opportunities to present their work on our in-house stages or at external venues.

    Course structure.

    Level 1

You experiment with the different effects of materials and spaces, incorporating your experiences into your own artistic project. You are introduced to the theory of light and colour, and create your own initial light installations. By attending numerous performances, you broaden your understanding of theatre. In addition, you are given insights into art- and cultural history in relation to contemporary discourses.

    Level 2

This level fosters collaboration through project-based teamwork including students from other disciplines at ZHdK. In the process, you also gain stage experience and learn different research methods, translate staging approaches into spatial settings and develop projects in theatres or external locations. Furthermore, you explore work methods for the design process, focusing on the creation of atmospheric and aesthetic spaces. The development of your craft skills helps to consolidate your own artistic profile as well. The theoretical work focuses on examining current staging practices, spatial theory as well as text analysis.

    Level 3

You design and realize a stage space at ZHdK, starting with a model and ending with a live performance. While working in interdisciplinary teams, you develop a concept based on a pre-defined text or topic, and incorporate your own artistic vision into your team. In the process, you will collaborate with the universityโ€™s technical and workshop staff, who will plan and manage the implementation including the development of a light concept that corresponds with your design.

    Graduation project

The graduation project offers you space to realize your own visions: you develop and implement a project of your own either in a theatre space, an installative or a model-like space. Your physical work is based on the research and analyses described in your thesis, which you have written in advance.

    Skills acquired in the course.

    Expertise / Profession

Formulation of artistic concepts and positions.
The ability to express your own creativity through artistic strategies and research techniques.
Implementation of ideas through artistic spatial design and construction (with colour, light, materials and projection techniques).
Design skills: the ability to verbalize and realize concepts, plan and implement smaller projects yourself.

    Position

You enjoy experimenting, stand out due to your theatre, art and theory-based knowledge and ability to reflect on it. Moreover, you research topics of social relevance and translate them into your own artistic language.

    Responsibility

See work as a continuing process: openness, resilience and the ability to act independently are the basis of artistic work and lifelong learning. Establish projects and formats with your fellow students from the other theatre majors and collaborate with students from other disciplines at ZHdK (for example, with Digital Game Design and Interaction Design). This degree programme also promotes and works closely with fine arts.
