Course content.
Professionally relevant knowledge and necessary skills in compact form: The โSacred Musicโ minor prepares students for employment in the church music sector. Theoretical courses give students a fundamental understanding of theology, hymnology and liturgy. Additionally, courses in church music history and organ building contextualise the current practice in the rich history of sacred music. Other skills such as leading congregational singing and Gregorian chant are taught through more practical methods. The degree course was designed to meet the needs of Swiss churches as employers and therefore covers a wide ecumenical span. The minor gives student the best foundation for employment as organists or choral conductors in churches; it is also open to any interested students. Taught by leading practitioners in the church music field who are at the forefront of the professional world, students benefit from their insight and critical reflection of continuing developments.
The minor, which is taught in German, is offered by the Church Music profile. It is suitable for both Bachelorโs and Masterโs students.
Skills acquired in the course
In-depth knowledge of the relevant aspects of church music from both its historical practice and the present day are taught, extending through to practical skills such as leading congregational singing and Gregorian chant.
Admissions requirements
The โSacred Musicโ minor is primarily designed for students from the Organ or Choral conducting majors. Prospective applicants from other departments are also welcome, and should be able to demonstrate a deep interest in the topic.

Time structure.
This minor takes place on Friday mornings and Friday afternoons during the major weeks. During the minor weeks, there will be an additional exam preparation lesson and the corresponding exams in the individual modules.
