Course content.
You acquire a basic understanding of a variety of scientific and artistic research approaches, and equip yourself with a critical methodological tool set that enables you to reflect on and develop your own practice from a research perspective. The minor teaches you different approaches to research in the arts as well as the entire range of research processes and methods used at ZHdK. In the process, current and historical perspectives on a range of research contexts, approaches and practices are closely examined and discussed as a group. You put the knowledge and skills that you have acquired to the test in an independent project. The programme and interaction between students are intentionally interdisciplinary in nature.
Skills acquired in the course.
– Develop research approaches for your own artistic practice
– Reflect on the cultures and formats of research, and position them in their respective disciplinary contexts
– Differentiate between and apply the various methodological approaches to the arts (handling sources, best practices in research, methods of scientific work, etc.)
Admissions requirements.
The “Research in the Arts: Practices, Methods, Contexts – basic” minor is aimed at all students who would like to gain an initial insight into research work and who are interested in transferring research skills to their artistic practice.
Language skills required.
You need the following languages to take this minor:
– German and English: to be able to follow a discussion
– German and English: to actively participate in a verbal exchange
– German and English: to understand a text
– German or English: to write a text
Benefits of studying this minor.
The minor course is completely unique in terms of conceptual orientation, methodological diversity and interdisciplinary approach. It covers the research approaches of all the departments – and enables broad-based exploration of artistic, artistic-scientific and scientific research articulations.
Time structure.
The minor takes place as a full-day course in the minor weeks in week 2 to 4 and week 8 to 10 and continues on Friday afternoons during the semester.
