    Assessment of Entry-Level Competencies

    Certain entry-level competencies are required as a condition of participation in this minor and are assessed as described below. Information on which majors must complete the assessment can be found in the PDF โ€œMore about this minorโ€.

    Entry-Level Competencies

    In accordance with the Minor Allocation Regulations, students must undergo an aptitude assessment to demonstrate that they possess the required entry-level competencies: 

    • Able to adeptly apply their instrumental-artistic skills on one of the following instruments (musicality, interpretation, stylistics, pulse, rhythm, intonation, technique, performance): Bassoon, Harp, Horn, Clarinet, Double Bass, Oboe, Timpani, Trombone, Flute, Percussion, Trumpet, Tuba, Viola, Violin, Violoncello
    • Confidently handle auditions

    Students who are enrolled in the  

    • Master of Arts in Specialized Music Performance, Major in Orchestra, Major in Soloist (with a Major in Bassoon, Harp, Horn, Clarinet, Double Bass, Marimba, Oboe, Timpani, Trombone,
    • Master of Arts in Music Performance, Major in Bassoon, Major in Harp, Major in Horn, Major in Double Bass, Major in Clarinet, Major in Marimba, Major in Oboe, Major in Trombone, Major in Flute, Major in Percussion, Major in Trumpet, Major in Tuba, Major in Viola, Major in Violin, Major in Violoncello
    • Master of Arts in Music Pedagogy, Major in Instrumental/Vocal Pedagogy (with a Major in Bassoon, Harp, Horn, Clarinet, Double Bass, Marimba, Oboe, Timpani, Trombone, Flute, Percussion, Trumpet, Tuba, Viola, Violin, Cello)

    are not required to undergo an aptitude assessment. They have already demonstrated the required competencies through their admission to their degree programme.

    Aptitude Assessment

    Students seeking admission to the Minor in Orchestral Studies must demonstrate their aptitude as follows: 

    • Artistic-musical performance consisting of one solo work as well as five assigned orchestral parts (audition) of max. 15 minutes on one of the following instruments: Bassoon, Harp, Horn, Clarinet, Double Bass, Oboe, Timpani, Trombone, Flute, Percussion, Trumpet, Tuba, Viola, Violin, Violoncello 
    • Interview (5 minutes)

    • Minor start in autumn semester
      Music students: Fri, 2 May 2025, 9 a.m to 8 p.m., 6.K15
      Non-music students: Fri, 16 May 2025, 9โ€“10 a.m., 6.K15
    • Minor start in spring semester
      All students: Fri, 25 October 2025
      4 p.m., Room 6.K15

    Aptitude Assessment Criteria

    The following criteria are used to assess whether students possess the entry-level competencies in accordance with the Minor Allocation Regulations and the Degree Programme Regulations:  

    • Ability to develop (artistic potential) 
    • Independence and expressiveness (artistic quality of the performance) 
    • Specific professional competence (musical-artistic skills and abilities) 
    • Reflective ability and self-assessment 
    • Communication skills and social competence
