“Chords and Keys” – a cooperation with HfMT Munich

A cooperation project of ZHdK and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Munich. Directed by Isabel Mundry (Zurich/Munich) and Jean-Pierre Collot (Munich)

How do you go about writing a new piece for an old instrument – the piano – in 2020? To what extent do you have to consider its history and the countless works that have already been written for it? What happens if you just forget what has been done up to now? What does it mean to experiment on an artistic level, to explore or research new things, taking into account the specifications of the piano in terms of construction, mood and sound?

And how does one work out a new piece for piano as an artist/ performer? How do you decipher unusual musical texts or learn playing techniques that have never been used in the repertoire before? How do you recognize the idea of a new piece? How do you make it your own and develop your own freedom in its composition?
