There is a two-stage process:
After a preliminary selection (application videos and portfolio), the examination board (main subject lecturers and major programme directors or their representatives) decides on a selection of candidates who will be invited to Zurich for the aptitude test.
The on-site aptitude test consists of two parts:
A. Major Subject
- Audition Main Instrument (15 minutes)
Candidates submit a list of prepared works. This must include a complete solo concerto (or solo concert piece) plus at least a further 50 minutes of repertoire from all periods/styles of the main instrument.
a) Major Piano: Candidates present five to six repertoire pieces, from at least three stylistic periods. Included is a complete solo concert (or solo concert piece with orchestra), a complete classical sonata, a representative work of the Romantic period, and a virtuoso etude (Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, or similar). Complete length: at least 50 minutes, plus solo concert.
b) Major Percussion: Performance of a selection of works for Snare Drum, Timpani,
Marimbaphone and Vibraphone from this list with a programme duration of 50 minutes.
c) Major Marimbaphone: Performance of a selection of works from this list with a programme duration of 50 minutes.
d) Major Organ: Candidates prepare a programme of approx. 50 minutes duration with solo works from different epochs/styles of a high level of difficulty (e.g. Bach: BWV 542 or 548; Widor: 1st movement from the 5th or 6th Organ Symphony; Messiaen: “Transports de Joie” from L’Ascension).
Improvisation is also tested in 2 parts:
A) prepared: two chorale partitas on two stylistically different, self-selected chorales (e.g. baroque and neo-modal); the jury selects one of these;
B) unprepared: Short improvisation on a task set directly at the examination (Bible verse, chorale melody).
On request, ZHdK will provide an accompanist for the instrumental/vocal examination (prior rehearsals are not possible). → Application form
