More: MA Specialized Music Performance, Lied Duet

    Content and structure

    Course content.

The training in the Major in “Lied Duet” is aimed at singers and pianists who work together as an established ensemble and would like to be competitive on an international level – with a targeted selection of music, by perfecting their ability to play together, and by focusing on an unmistakable artistic profile.
Apart from consolidating their knowledge of the classical-romantic lied core repertoire, the Second Vienna School, the Mélodie Française as well as seminal works from the Anglo-Saxon area, there is a special focus on contemporary music.

    Course structure.

    Core

The module area consists of ensemble tuition as a duet, internal and external master classes, competitions and concerts, panels, class presentations and feedback rounds. Sound engineering and video documentation of the students’ own work as well as raising the profile of their own repertoire are important for their professional positioning and marketability. The module area is rounded off with mentoring from senior lecturers and external experts connected with the Major.

    Extension

In the minor tuition (piano for singers, voice for pianists), the individual instrumental/vocal skills are developed with selected lecturers, challenging songs and works for voice and piano are examined in all their complexity, and the students’ artistic positioning is promoted.
Concerts, productions and competitions are important for new lied duets to rehearse their repertoire, gather experience, generate interest in the duet, and build a network. They also learn how much time is involved in organizing such undertakings.

    Profile

Students are able to develop an independent professional profile and improve their use of audiovisual communication and production forms, social media, other digital platforms and company forms. Learning and development steps are continuously reflected on, supported and documented in the digital portfolio during a mentoring session. This empowers students to take control of their career planning.

    Graduation exam/project

Students demonstrate what they have learnt in a repertoire examination and a public recital, which is supplemented with a written paper on the topic.
The presentation of their digital portfolio not only allows them to show what they have achieved in addition to their Major studies, but also the skills they have acquired to promote their own career when dealing with digitality in aspects such as their online presence, social media profile, and production of audiovisual materials.

    Module plan:

    • Module plan Master Specialized Music Performance, Lied Duet (PDF, in German)

    Skills acquired in the course.

The recognition and analysis of the mechanisms of musical-artistic collaboration and the coalescence of creative impulses into a conclusive interpretive unit are key topics of this degree programme, which are honed as skills. The central importance of language in lieder and the performance dimension requires a duet to explore the repertoire from a poetic, psychological and effective stage perspective that extends beyond simply making music together.

    Admissions requirements.

The Major is aimed at singers and pianists who work together as an established ensemble. Students are required to have an outstanding pianistic/vocal ability and be able to gain analytical insights into musical works, and implement them effectively in their interpretation of music.
