There is a two-stage process:
After a preliminary selection (application videos and portfolio), the examination board (main subject lecturers and major programme directors or their representatives) decides on a selection of candidates who will be invited to Zurich for the aptitude test.
The examination consists of two parts:
- Artistic performance
Mandatory pieces:
J. Brahms, Symphony No. 3, horn solo from the 3rd movement, and R. Wagner, from Rienzi, Act 1 (Finale), 4. Scene, 2nd horn from the orchestra rehearsal, Edition Peters, page 76
- Performance of at least 3 different repertoire pieces, all from different epochs/styles, with a programme duration of 50 minutes.
- Candidates submit a list of works at the beginning of the examination.
- The examination board listens to a selection.
- At least one piece must be performed from memory.
- Sight-reading of a simple piece may be required at the end.
On request, ZHdK will provide an accompanist for the instrumental/vocal examination (prior rehearsals are not possible). → Application form
- Interview
In an interview, candidates are asked about their motivation and their study and career goals.
Total duration: 20 minutes
