    Assessment of Entry-Level Competencies

    Certain entry-level competencies are required as a condition of participation in this minor and are assessed as described below. Information on which majors must complete the assessment can be found in the PDF “More about this minor”.

    Entry-Level Competencies

    In accordance with the Minor Allocation Regulations, students must undergo an aptitude assessment to demonstrate that they possess the required entry-level competencies: 

    • Able to adeptly apply their instrumental-artistic skills in singing or on one of the following instruments (musicality, interpretation, stylistics, pulse, rhythm, intonation, technique, performance): Accordion, Bassoon, Clarinet, Double Bass, Fortepiano, Guitar, Harp, Harpsichord, Horn, Lute, Oboe, Organ, Percussion/Timpani, Piano, Recorder, Saxophone, Transverse Flute, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba, Violin, Viola, Violoncello.
    • Able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of historical sources, different styles and playing practices,
    • Able to make historically based interpretative decisions independently and to express them in a differentiated manner on their chosen instrument

    Students who are enrolled in a DMU major are not required to undergo an aptitude assessment if the equivalent historical instrument is selected. They have already demonstrated that they possess the required competencies through their admission to their degree programme (→ Overview of the corresponding instruments as PDF download). If a different instrument is chosen, please contact us via email.

    Assessment

    Students who are enrolled in a DMU major are not required to undergo an aptitude assessment.

    Students from other Departments (not DMU) seeking admission to the Minor in Historical Performance Practice must demonstrate their aptitude as follows: 

    • Artistic-musical performance lasting 10 minutes in singing or on one of the following instruments, either historical or modern, with a free choice of repertoire: Accordion, Bassoon, Clarinet, Double Bass, Fortepiano, Guitar, Harp, Harpsichord, Horn, Lute, Oboe, Organ, Percussion/Timpani, Piano, Recorder, Saxophone, Transverse Flute, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba, Violin, Viola, Violoncello
    • Interview lasting 5 minutes in German and English

    Before the minor is chosen, an optional interview with the minor coordinator is recommended.  
    10 minutes audition (on modern or historical instrument, free choice of historical repertoire) and 5 minutes interview in German and English. 

    Historical instruments can be borrowed from ZHdK, if they are available.

    • Minor start in spring semester
      Calendar week 43
      23.10., 10:00 a.m. – 1 pm  
      24.10., 10:00 a.m. –12:00 p.m.
    • Minor start in autumn semester
      For DMU students: Calendar week 18
      28.4., 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 6.E05; 1.5., 9:00 am – 1:00 p.m., 6.E05 
      For students of all other departments: Calendar week 20 by arrangement 
      14..5., 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 6.K14
      15.5., 12.00–1:00 p.m., 6.E26

    Aptitude Assessment Criteria

    The following criteria are used to assess whether students possess the entry-level competencies in accordance with the Minor Allocation Regulations and the Degree Programme Regulations:  

    • Ability to develop (artistic potential)
    • Independence and expressiveness (artistic quality of the historically informed performance)
    • Specific professional competence (musical-artistic skills and abilities)
    • Reflective ability and self-assessment
    • Communication skills and social competence
