Design Theory and Research
In the minor ‘Design Theory and Research’, you can pursue your own research question – be it in the form of theoretical conceptual work, design-historical analyses, application-oriented research or a theory- or evidence-based design concept. Mentors from various scientific disciplines will support you in honing your design-theoretical tools and finding your own research path!

Have you always wondered what lies behind the many design theory buzzwords or how to combine theory and practice in a meaningful way? Would you like to learn how to conduct an empirical study properly or develop a scientifically sound design concept?
Then the minor in Design Theory and Research is perfect for you – because here, you can focus on your own individual research interest, be it theoretical or application-oriented!
You will have the time and opportunity to devote yourself entirely to a topic of your choice. In doing so, you will gain your first experience of theoretical work and research processes and develop new perspectives for your further studies.
In addition to a general introduction to the broad field of design research, you can choose between two specializations:
– You can opt for a cultural and social science perspective that critically examines the social, cultural and ecological effects of design (design studies).
– or you can opt for an application-oriented, engineering or scientific approach that focuses on evidence-based solution design for socially relevant problems (design science).
In both cases, the innovative potential of ‘design knowledge’ is at the forefront: What distinguishes design from the classical scientific disciplines and how can inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration succeed?
Throughout the programme, you will be closely supervised by experienced researchers in the respective fields and will be able to regularly exchange ideas with your peer group in colloquia. If the content lends itself to it, you will also gain insights into ongoing research projects.
You will present the results of your research in an academic paper, a theoretically or evidence-based design concept including documentation, an (audio)visual essay or a prototypical solution.
The minor is taught in German and English and is offered by the cross-faculty areas of design theory at the Institute for Design Research (IDR). It is aimed at bachelor's and master's students.
Skills acquired in the course.
– Knowledge of different perspectives of design theory and research (research with, for, through, and about design)
– Development and identification of an individual research question
– Conception and realization of a research design
– Handling of theoretical terms and concepts
– Thinking in terms of complex structures and relationships
– Development of a coherent, theory- and research-based design concept
– Presentation of research results in text and/or design form
– Insight into other disciplines as well as inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation
Admissions requirements.
The minor ‘Design Theory and Research’ is open to all ZHdK students. It is particularly recommended for those who
– are well organised and able to work independently
– enjoy reading and researching
– like to explore complex topics, issues and theories in depth
– pursue a design practice guided by theory and research

Major-Minor Programme Model
At ZHdK, students choose a Major. In addition to this core subject, they can choose one or two Minors to deepen or expand their major skills and knowledge across various disciplines. This wide choice of courses is unique in Europe and enables students to develop and sharpen their individual profile.
