    Assessment of Entry-Level Competencies

    Certain entry-level competencies are required as a condition of participation in this minor and are assessed as described below. Information on which majors must complete the assessment can be found in the PDF “More about this minor”.

    Entry-Level Competencies

    In accordance with the Minor Allocation Regulations, students must undergo an aptitude assessment to demonstrate that they possess the required entry-level competencies: 

    • Able to adeptly apply their instrumental-artistic skills in historical singing or on one of these instruments (musicality, interpretation, stylistics, pulse, rhythm, intonation, technique, performance),
    • Able to demonstrate a good knowledge of historical sources, different styles and playing practices at the level of the Minor in Historical Performance Practice  
    • Able to make interpretive decisions independently and express them in a differentiated manner on the historical instrument

    Aptitude Assessment

    Students seeking admission to the Minor in Advanced Historical Performance Practice must demonstrate their aptitude as follows – these historical instruments or historical singing are available (fill out the form and upload it directly into the minor elective tool): 

    • Artistic-musical performance (15 minutes) on one of the following historical instruments or historical singing and with a choice of repertoire as listed below: Baroque Guitar, Baroque Triple Harp, Recorder, Cembalo, Cimbasso, Clavichord, Fortepiano, G-Violone, Historical Bass, Historical Cello, Historical Bassoon, Historical Horn, Historical Clarinet, Historical Oboe, Historical Percussion, Historical Trumpet, Historical Violin, Historical Viola, Lute, Ophicleide, Organ, Transverse Flute, Viola da Gamba, Violone, Wiener Bass. 
    • Interview with the minor coordinator (5 minutes in German and English)

    • Minor start in spring semester
      Calendar week 43
      23.10., 10:00 a.m. – 1 pm  
      24.10., 10:00 a.m. –12:00 p.m.
    • Minor start in autumn semester
      For DMU students: Calendar week 18
      28.4., 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 6.E05; 1.5., 9:00 am – 1:00 p.m., 6.E05 
      For students of all other departments: Calendar week 20 by arrangement 
      14..5., 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 6.K14
      15.5., 12.00–1:00 p.m., 6.E26

    Examination content and form:

    The initial competencies will be tested during an audition and an aptitude interview with the minor coordinator. A program of 15 minutes must be prepared and performed on site; accompaniment is available. Specific requirements for historical singing and historical instruments: 

    For instrumentalists: 

    The minor is being completed on a historical instrument. 
    The historical instrument is already used for the entrance examination. 
    Historical instruments will be provided by the ZHdK, if available. 

    Baroque Timpani

    An overture from the 17th century 
    Arend Weitzel 2 dances from 21 etudes for 2 baroque timpani 
    Nick Woud Symphonic Studies for Timpani No. 5 

    Baroque Triple Harp

    A work from the 17th century 
    One work with basso continuo (with ensemble, duo) from the 18th century 
    A work of your choice between 1500 and 1800 

    Harpsichord and Clavichord

    A contrapuntal work or a continuo realization prima vista (medium level of difficulty)  
    One work from the period before 1700  
    One work from the 18th century 

    Fortepiano

    A work from the period between 1750 and 1800 
    A work from the period between 1800 and 1850 
    An etude by Czerny 

    Historical Violin, Historical Viola, Historical Cello, Recorder, Transverse Flute, Historical Oboe, Historical Bassoon, Viola Da Gamba, Violone, Historical Bass 

    A chorale melody (solo) 
    A dance movement from the 17th or 18th century 
    A work of your choice from the period between 1500 and 1800 

    Historical Singing (at least three languages)

    A monody from the 17th century  
    One sacred aria  
    One opera aria with recitative  

    Historical Horn

    One work from the period between 1750–1800 
    One work from the period between 1800–1850 
    One work of your choice  

    Historical Trombone

    One etude (historical) 
    A work from the 17th century 
    A work from the 18th century  

    Historical Trumpet

    A simple etude (historical) 
    One work (also for) for 2–3 trumpets 
    A work of your choice from the period between 1600 and 1800 

    Lute

    One vocal work in tablature 
    Two works from the 16th, 17th or 18th century 

    Organ

    A contrapuntal work or a continuo realization prima vista (medium level of difficulty)  
    One work from the period before 1700  
    One work from the 18th century

    Aptitude Assessment Criteria

    The following criteria are used to assess whether students possess the entry-level competencies in accordance with the Minor Allocation Regulations and the Degree Programme Regulations:  

    • Ability to develop (artistic potential)
    • Independence and expressiveness (artistic quality of the historically informed performance).
    • Specific professional competence (musical-artistic abilities and skills)
    • Reflective ability and self-assessment
    • Communication skills and social competence
