There is a two-stage process:
After a preliminary selection (application videos and portfolio), the examination board (main subject lecturers and major programme directors or their representatives) decides on a selection of candidates who will be invited to Zurich for the aptitude test.
The examination consists of two parts:
- Artistic presentation
- At the beginning of the examination, candidates submit a list of works prepared for the aptitude test. This list contains works in different languages — taking into account different epochs and styles — but at least one opera aria and one German art song. The repertoire submitted must last at least 50 minutes and at least one work must be performed from memory.
- The examination board will listen to a selection.
- Sight-singing.
On request, ZHdK will provide an accompanist for the instrumental/vocal examination (prior rehearsals are not possible). → Application form
- Interview
In an interview, candidates are asked about their motivation and their study and career goals.
Total duration including consultation of the expert committee: 20 minutes
