The exam consists of two parts and is carried out at the ZHdK:
A. Major
- Conducting
- Starting and conducting a self decided four-part motet set (degree of difficulty F. Poulenc: “La blanche neige” from “Sept chansons” or W. Burkhard “Ich hebe meine Augen auf” from “Little Psalter”; bring 4 copies of the music notes)
- Movement and conducting exercises prima vista
- Presentation of a rhythm prima vista
- Choir rehearsal
- 15-minute rehearsal with the Kantorei ZHdK. The piece will be sent in advance
- Singing
- Presentation of an accompanied art song or an aria in German
- Prima vista singing of demanding choral parts (see examples)
- Prima vista recitation of a short German text
- Piano
- Selection of prepared works from two epochs (minimum requirements: Bach: 3-part inventions, sonata movement by Mozart or Beethoven)
- Score play: Prima vista play of piano scores and classical choral scores until four staves (SATB).
B. Colloquium
In an interview, the candidates are asked about their study and professional goals. In particular, the design of the individual profile is discussed as part of the course. On the occasion of the interview, foreign-language candidates will decide on a requirement to attend the ZHdK German courses before the start of the semester and as a condition for studying (see admission requirements §3). German language skills B2 are expected upon entry into the course.

The panel comprises lecturers from the relevant major and representatives from the Department Committee.
