24/7 Performance: (Re-)Presentation in the Algorithmic Regime

Workshop

01.12.2023, 10:00 – 17:00

Toni-Areal, Raum 3.K13, Ebene 3, Pfingstweidstrasse 96, Zürich

The workshop 24/7 Performance: (Re-)Presentation in the Algorithmic Regime in collaboration with Theater Neumarkt Zurich, Cabaret Voltaire and with the artists Dorota Gawęda and Eglė Kulbokaitė that will take place in November / December 2023 will explore the following research question: What characterizes the interrelationship between the production of artistic content (primarily performative in nature) and its modes of (re-)presentation and reception - especially in the realm of an algorithmic regime? For this purpose, Gawęda and Kulbokaitė will create a performance for the online/offline space. The site-specific performance will be performed live in one of the houses and simultaneously shown as a live stream in the other house - followed by a conversation.

The purpose of the workshop is to adress as well as to experiment with questions of presentation (of the performance) and its representation (as a live stream). How do the artist develop artistic strategies that create a moment of reflection between bodily perception and its medial mediation (online / offline)? What procedures are put in motion in order to thematize the presence and absence of (perceptual) subjects. And how to discribe those strategies and procedures, i.e. as well as what they might be symptomatic of?

The second part of the workshop will take place at the ZHDK and will serve to collect and discuss first results (from the performance) together with guests in order to sharpen my research question about artistic strategies of presentation and artistic practices with images ("image practices") in the context of a world shaped by digital technologies and algorithmic control strategies, respectively to test first hypotheses and sharpen concepts.
