Werktexte / Program notes Fusun Köksal quelle'd is a compound word referring to both "die Quelle" in German, which means source, spring, and the word quelled in English, meaning supressed, restricted. The work is composed for E-Mex Ensemble in the first 8 months of the year 2020, to be performed at Now! Festival, Essen. The music builds itself around the initial bass drum figure from where all following events are derived. This figure, once a pivot force, soon grows into a decisive element of all following events and acts as the dominating/restricting force silencing others. Although the work can not be considered as program music, it elaborates all sound images and gestural identities around this strong initial notion. The trajectory unfolds in 7 short sections or streched-out moments with descriptive titles as follows:
I- Calm and spacious but fluent; II- Gradually escalating; III- Powerful and insistent; IV- Disappearing into the emptiness; V- Abruptly shouting; VI- Hectic; VII- Energetic; VII- Tired and without energy.
The 8 months I worked on the quelle’d has been a period of time both in terms of the intensity of the work, as well as in the need for self-reflection going through the extraordinary pandemic.
