Departing from some aspects of the 28th Bienal de São Paulo, co-curated by Ana Paula Cohen in 2008, the talk will consider some fundamental matters in curatorial practices: from the context in which the project is created to its unfolding in the actual space – always in close collaboration with artists to create the many layers that constitute the public reception of the exhibition. In the specific case of the 28th Bienal, how the history of the institution, the archive, the architectural space, the memory of frequent visitors, lighting, visual identity, commissioned art works, and different programs got interwoven to create the new body of the project in its present time and space.

Ana Paula Cohen is an independent curator, editor, and writer. She is the founder and chair of the post-graduation Program in Curatorial Studies and Practice, FAAP, São Paulo. Cohen was the curator-in-residence at the Center for Curatorial Studies – Bard College, NY, the co-curator for the 28th Bienal de São Paulo (2008), and the co-curator of the Encuentro Internacional de Medellín 07 (Medellin, Colombia). She was a visiting professor at the California College of the Arts, San Francisco (2011-2013), the co-director of PIESP, an independent program for artists and curators in São Paulo (2013-2014), and the director of the Program Bolsa Pampulha, at Museu da Pampulha, Belo Horizonte (2010-2011). Cohen was the co-founder and director of the project Istmo – flexible archive, in São Paulo (2004-2007). She has curated several exhibitions such as "On Cohabitation: Films by Yael Bartana" (The Banff Centre, Canada); "Embodied Archeology of Architecture and Landscape" (Tel Aviv Museum); "Cildo Meireles – inserciones en circuitos ideologicos" (Museu de Antioquia, Medellín); "Subversiones diarias" (MALBA, Buenos Aires) "Telling Histories – an Archive and Three Case Studies – with Contributions by Mabe Bethônico and Liam Gillick" (Kunstverein München, Munich). She completed her PhD at the Nucleo de Estudos da Subjetividade (PUC, São Paulo), advised by Suely Rolnik, entitled: Reconstituição de um corpo de obra: arte, vida, museus e os diferentes modos de habitá-los [Reconstitution of a Body of Work: Art, Life, Museums and the Different Modes of Inhabiting Them].

The Postgraduate Programme in Curating (CAS / MAS Curating) is an international, English speaking, postgraduate part-time programme founded in 2005. It is conceived of as a discursive platform which imparts key areas of contemporary exhibition-making, knowledge production and curating by praxis-oriented project work. We understand curating as an activity and as an agency, as an interdisciplinary work process.

Critical reading, discussing and an excessive network! Our alumni are working worldwide. Since 2017 we offer distance learning opportunities.
With instruction modules, group activities, seminars and lectures held by an international selection of guest lecturers, various fields.

The Programme focuses less on the ‘genius concept’ of the exhibition planner as individual author – a highly controversial topic since the 1990s – than on cooperative, interdisciplinary working methods, as employed, for example, in film productions or non-government organizations. Exhibition-making / knowledge production / curating means the creation of innovative structures for the presentation of cultural artefacts, discourse and knowledge through interdisciplinary collaboration. In this field art, digital media, design, and architecture intermesh in new ways.
