Talk: Total Configurations: Curation between Auteur Politics and Ambient Commoning

Adopting the design-theoretical concern of a 'total configuration' (Dieter Rams) to comprehend the curatorial process in relation to the iterative invention of interfaces, talk and workshop explore a curatorial position that is as popular as it is problematic: the curator as organizer, as facilitator of dynamics of collaborative creation, as designer of a dynamic of resistance to the subsumption of aesthetic experience in economies of capture, as author of a politics. Through multidisciplinary engagements with ambient media, this exploration relates reflections on curation to the dynamic of ambient commoning as a concern that is both aesthetic and ethico-political, with particular emphasis on the implications of commoning for processes of (de)institutionalization.

Soenke Zehle is lecturer in Media Theory at the Academy of Fine Arts Saar, Soenke Zehle also co-initiated and currently works as Managing Director of the academy's xm:lab - Experimental Media Lab. His work at xm:lab frames (institutionally and conceptually) his research activities. Drawing on his background in comparative literature, philosophy, and translation, he frequently co-develops arts-and-technology research projects with a particular focus on practice-based and transcultural approaches. Recent research has focused on the relationship between algorithmic cultures and the status of aesthetic experience, with a particular focus on documentarisms as well as depletion design.
