    Content and structure

    You design composition processes, are proficient in the technology, and reflect independently on functional music and its resources. Whether in the entertainment industry or the cultural sector, you will have the necessary artistic and technical skills to cope with the daily realities of your profession. 

    Course content.

    The degree programme focuses on practical and contemporary application. It spans the field of tension between artistic demands, versatile, solid craftsmanship, independent profile enhancement and functionality as well as application and market orientation. ‘Entrepreneurship’ and ‘international networking’ are very much practised and cultivated throughout the degree programme. 
    The course aims at connecting linear and interactive media as well as teaching students how to deal with the characteristics of the cultural sector and the entertainment industry. You will learn how to work in a complex team, interact with other art and design-related disciplines, and use state-of-the-art technology in practice-oriented projects that reflect the reality of the work done by professionals at the highest level. Aural training, analysis, history, dramaturgy and aesthetic thinking will sharpen your musical perception, thinking and communication, and support you in your own project work. 

    Course structure.

    The course is made up of three modules:

    Core subject

    In the core subjects, you will consolidate your own composition style and deepen your knowledge of methodologically diverse composition and production techniques and your understanding of dramaturgy. At the same time, the conscious and economical use of the means of production is also addressed. Students receive support from various mentors in carefully selecting suitable projects as well as with their work planning and consistent implementation.

    Individual profile/Self-Composed Music minor 

    For your profiling in the broad professional field of composition for film, theatre and media, you can choose from a wide range of options in the individual profile or in the Self-Composed Music minor and, if desired, additional individual tuition. The profile can be broadened or deepened, and can be adapted to individual student biographies or personal career goals. 

    Master’s examination 

    This consists of the Master’s project, a colloquium, the dossier (portfolio) and the Master’s thesis.

    Skills acquired in the course.

    • Compositional and conceptional skills to shape musical-functional processes in professional, creative and artistic terms. 
    • Select specific production techniques, plan them independently, use and implement them with confidence.
    • Reflect independently and critically on functional music and its means. 
    • Professionally apply comprehensive knowledge of work processes in rehearsals, studio sessions and mixing.
    • Handle a variety of production conditions, presentation forms and performance situations with confidence. 
    • Contribute actively to collaborations and teamwork thanks to differentiated self-perception, self-reflection and constructive communication.
    • Promote and critically question your own artistic development. 

    Admissions requirements.

    You are expected to command the basics and have experience of composing functional music, as well as personal commitment and the desire to deepen your knowledge in an area of film, theatre and media music. This includes:

    • A substantial dossier (portfolio): soundtracks for films, scenes, dance, games or other interdisciplinary projects
    • Experience in the production of sound and music 
    • Analytical skills
    • Technical musical skills in the use of various forms of music software, especially digital audio workstations (DAWs) and notation as well as (various) musical instruments.
