DIPLOMA PROJECT / THESIS
- Project title: Embodied Memory
- Description: This bachelor thesis explores how dance may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Research shows that movement involving the body, mind, emotions and social interaction can support brain health and may slow down the development of symptoms. Dance, as a full-body activity, offers a unique way to explore these effects.
The project takes the form of an artistic video set in nature. Using contemporary dance, it shows four stages of life: childhood, adolescence, adulthood and elderly hood. Different movement qualities express how the body changes over time and how it may become more vulnerable to neurodegenerative disease. The work also looks at how Alzheimer’s affects the body, including loss of coordination and difficulties with spatial orientation, especially in the final stage of life.
The project connects scientific insights with artistic practice and offers a movement-based interpretation of the human life cycle.

Q&A WITH GIORGIA ALBERIO
What does dance mean to you?
- I am a person who tends to have a lot of thoughts at once in my brain. Dance gives me a place where I can be fully present with the movement, the music and tune into my body. My mind turns peaceful and calm. To find and feel this feeling is very special.
What memory will you take with you from your time at ZHdK?
- I cherish the little moments in between the most, during classes or rehearsals with my classmates. Laughing together or enjoying the sun during lunch break on the rooftop of the university. Lastly sharing the stage with my beautiful class will forever feel very special to me.
Which work or choreographer particularly inspires you, and why?
- I really connected with the choreographic language of Antonio Ruz und the piece he created for us called 'hesitation'. I very much appreciated his approach to movement and creation. His work resonates with my artistic interests.
