    In the Ruinous Anytime

    A Phantasmagoria on Balkan Taxis

Master Art Education - Curatorial Studies

In the Ruinous Anytime, Alex Karapancsev, Zürcher Hochschule der Künste

To inquire into the nature of narrating history, Alex Karapancsev proposes a phantasmagoria in three parts as curatorial research into the latent imaginaries of the Balkans. Starting from the figure of Saint George, Karapancsev traces the rituals of historiography that establish new symbolic fields and encrypt the ruinous past beyond memory. Situated at the intersection of Critical Balkanology and Gothic studies, the work frames the experience of history as an image that orders the world and positions its observer within that order. As a technology of arrangement, history fantasizes a fictional relationship between the present, the past and the future and categorizes communities inside or outside of that fiction. The thesis weaves through three fictions – a philological glossary, a processional proposal and a computer game – to present a series of curated screens on which the excluded specters of Western modernity may manifest. By proposing three so-called gothumentaries, Karapancsev explores the limits between positivist history and haptic stories in moments of contamination, conversion, encryptment, reanimation and globalization.
