DIPLOMA PROJECT / THESIS
- Project title: Dancer in Apperture
- Description: What happens when dance is captured in a still image? Can you still feel its presence? Does it speak to you in the same way as a live performance? Dance photography is often seen merely as documentation, rather than an art form in its own right.
Dancer in Aperture is a project that brings together two art forms: dance and photography. I have always been inspired by the way images can complement movement – how a single frame can sometimes hold the same intention as a dancer in motion. In this project, I combine my passion with my hobby, exploring the possibilities of creating new work through dance photography. Across three photos series, I work with different themes, going beyond documentation to tell stories about movement and the human behind the dancer.

Q&A WITH JASMIJN SLUI
What does dance mean to you?
- It’s hard for me to really explain what dance means to me. It feels like it has always been there, like it’s simply a part of who I am. I can’t imagine my life without it. Through movement, I come to understand myself better and discover what I want to express. It’s also a vulnerable side of me that I choose to share, as a way to express myself and hopefully inspire others.
What memory will you take with you from your time at ZHdK?
- Everything I experienced at ZHdK felt truly special. The intensity of the training and rehearsals gave me a clear understanding of what it means to work in the dance field. I will always remember my first time performing on stage - feeling nervous and a bit unsure of myself. By the last performance, I felt confident, physically strong, and full of adrenaline that gave me happy chills. I’m also incredibly grateful for my wonderful colleagues, with whom I shared so many genuine moments, they truly made me feel at home in Zürich.
Which work or choreographer particularly inspires you, and why?
- One work that will always stay with me is Nachtträume, choreographed by Marcos Morau and performed by Ballet Zürich. It moved me in such a way that I had to sit in silence for a few minutes before I could leave my seat. I had never experienced a Gesamtkunstwerk like this before, everything felt dreamlike. Marcos Morau’s movement language inspired me immensely, especially when I had the opportunity to explore his qualities myself during my internship at Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, working on another piece: Cathedral.
