How long have you been dancing and what do you love most about it?
I have been dancing for almost 15 years, as I took my first ballet class at the age of 3. Over the years, my love for dance has evolved and I only just started to understand why it means so much to me in these past few years. From dancing around in the kitchen to spending hours in the studio, dance has been a constant in my life. I love the never-ending challenges and always having something to work towards. I love creating a connection with the audience, expressing myself, and telling a story through movement.
What has been your most memorable moment at Zurich Dance Academy?
There have been so many memorable moments and meaningful connections during these past three years that I will always cherish. One standout memory was our end of year performance in my second year, when I had the chance to dance in Scotch Symphony by Balanchine. I look back on the entire process, from rehearsals to our three performances, with a bittersweet feeling. The piece had a strong corps de ballet element, and it was an amazing experience to dance it with my friends. I still remember us making eye contact and smiling just before a step or a lift, and the little good luck rituals we had before stepping on stage.
I would also like to mention the unforgettable experience that was dancing in all 12 performances of Giselle by Patrice Bart, all thanks to the incredible opportunity from the Academy and Ballett Zürich. I learned so much during this process and grew as a dancer. The final year of school can get stressful, and doubts can arise, but whenever I stepped on stage and felt the support and power of the corps de ballet, especially in Act II with the Wilis, all my doubts disappeared, and I felt so sure that this is what I want to do. I got to live my dream, and for that, I am forever grateful.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I see myself dancing in a company where I feel inspired, challenged, and seen. I hope to build strong connections with the people around me and feel fulfilled and happy in my work. I would love to work with great choreographers, push my artistic and physical limits, and be on stage as much as possible. I might also start studying alongside dancing to pursue my dream of one day becoming a therapist.
The best feeling on stage is for me…
...when you connect with the other dancers on stage. When you look at each other with your partner, or when you move as one in the group. And at the end of the performance when you realize you did it and hear the applause from the audience, knowing you gave all you had and could give something to the people watching.
What piece of advice would you give younger dancers who are hoping to grow and achieve their dreams in dance?
Believe in yourself and never give up on your dreams. You must become your number one cheerleader, even though we are often our harshest critics. Be kind to yourself. Work hard and stay humble, but also learn to listen to your body and trust your journey. While technical abilities are very important, I've found that my mental state and mindset had a big effect on my dancing. So take care of your mental health, build a strong support system, and most importantly, remember why you love to dance.
