Biografie
Helene Romakin is a scholar in cultural science, curator, and editor based in Berlin and Zurich. In her work Romakin focuses on practices of artistic research, situated knowledges, and role of speculative fiction in academic writing. Currently she is a postdoctoral researcher at fsp-t ZHdK and Freie Universität Berlin.
In 2023, she successfully completed her PhD at ETH Zurich with the dissertation titled "Narrating the Anthropocene in Art, Architecture, and Film in Works by Lara Almarcegui, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Peter Zumthor," under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Philip Ursprung and Prof. Dr. Karen van den Berg.
In 2021, together with Berit Seidel, she initiated the project "Protect Us From What We Want, which explores the desire to travel in the Anthropocene and experimental storytelling methods (https://turritopsiscloud.wordpress.com/).
Romakin is the co-founder and co-curator of several non-profit art projects. In 2020 she co-founded the collective ~tilde in Zurich, with whom she co-curated the X-cene Matinee, a performance series with Clemens Krauss, Isabel Lewis & Stefanie Hessler at the Wind Tunnel, ZhdK, Zurich. Romakin is the co-founder and co-curator of the Berlin-based non-profit project for contemporary art LET THERE BE_ (2016/17), where she organized exhibitions, performances, and screenings with artists such as Dora García, Nicoline van Harskamp, Joey Holder, Jenna Sutela, and Marie Voignier, among others. In 2010 Romakin initiated the audio-visual project LAIKA where she presented several events with the artists and contributors such as Cornelia und Holger Lund, Chris Imler, David O’Reilly, DJ Elephant Power, Emmanuelle 5, Gina D’Orio, Jeffers Egan, Raum für Projektion, Reynold Reynolds, Sandra Naumann, Werner Dafeldecker, Wojciech Kosma, among others. In 2018 Romakin curated the research exhibition Jörg Schlick at the Künstlerhaus, Halle für Kunst und Medien, Graz; and in 2014 the exhibition Sets, Structures, Relations with Niklas Goldbach and Astrid Nippoldt at Galerie Rockelmann &, Berlin.
She has co-edited books like Invitation – Archive as Event, research project of Freie Universität and Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, and Archiv der Avantgarden, Dresden, published by Spector Books (fortchoming 2025); TRUST, a monograph on the artist collective U5, published by Verlag für moderne Kunst, Vienna (2021); and Jörg Schlick. Monografie und Werkverzeichnis, published by Buchhandlung Walther König (2018). Romakin has contributed to publications such as Touch Wood (Lars Müller Publishers, forthcoming 2022); Thinking in Thin Air (Lars Müller Publishers, 2020). She is a regular contributor to the online magazine artfridge.de.
Romakin is a former professional chess player.
