Subject on the school curriculum. Along with this term widely used in German-speaking Switzerland, together with simply “drawing” (Zeichnen), cf. the
Curriculum Regulations of the Canton of Solothurn), elsewhere in the German-speaking regions one finds synonyms such as “art pedagogy” (Kunstpädagogik), in Germany, and “art education” (Bildnerische Erziehung), in Austria.
Each of these terms implies slightly different programmes, e.g. in terms of subject content and methodology: can contemporary art be regarded as structure-providing content from which methodology can be derived, or is the focus primarily on the teaching and learning of creative techniques, and if so, which ones?
