Workshop, 15 June 2022, Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK)
09:30-13:00
The New European Bauhaus (NEB), an initiative launched in 2020 by the EU Commission, aims to promote social transformation along the guiding values of sustainability, aesthetics and inclusivity and thereby to stimulate the implementation of the so-called ยซGreen New Dealยป. Art and culture in the broader sense, as well as the cultural and creative industries in particular, have a major role to play in attaining this goal. For this reason, Europeโs arts universities have also embraced the initiative and positioned themselves as competent actors. Many higher arts institutions are currently rendering the NEB programme fruitful for their teaching, research and transfer activities.
As the NEB is an EU initiative, Swiss higher education institutions have not yet been directly addressed. Nevertheless, they are still able to participate in NEB activities or to develop their own โ among others by actively engaging in the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA).
The workshop will explore the potentials of such participation and how these might be realized.
Workshop goals
- to take a closer look at the NEBโs goals and programme and to identify possible starting points for Swiss arts universities to initiate new approaches in research and teaching. This will also involve clarifying to what extent new interfaces between higher arts education, society and the economy can be created through engagement in the sense of the NEB.
- to consider ELIAโs involvement in the NEB and to examine how arts universities might participate and cooperate in the NEB through ELIA.
- to learn about and discuss concrete possibilities for designing NEB activities at arts universities by examining practical examples.
The discussion of these three topics will be introduced by keynote speeches and then pursued in greater depth in a structured discussion.
