"Urban Waters": Experience Water Differently Through Art Installations and Performances

In February 2025, the Strandbad Tiefenbrunnen in Zurich transformed into a unique space for interaction, experience, and reflection. The spotlight was on water—as an element and a natural resource. In the middle of winter, this event offered a special opportunity to experience the interplay of art, nature, and culture in an urban setting.

The park area featuring art installations was open daily from 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM and was freely accessible. All events and offerings were free of charge. On weekends (Friday through Sunday), a diverse program included performances, concerts, workshops, and other activities. All contributions—from the art installations to the events—were created by members of the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).

"Urban Waters" is supported by the Canton of Zurich as part of the #hallowasser project. www.hallowasser.ch.

An interesting SRF report (in German) on "Urban Waters" is available here. The article "Urban Waters – a dialogue between art and water" from ZETT Magazine can be accessed here.

    Performances

    • Fussbad für alle

      Julia Weber & Mayumi Arai
Scenography in collaboration with Monika Schori

The performance "Fussbad für alle" explores the relationships between water, care and protest. We understand care as a collective practice that relates to people, the environment, material objects and interpersonal relationships. Through our DIY footbath infrastructure and care practices, we investigate lake water as a precious common good and as a communal resource that fosters intimate and solidary connections between strangers. In doing so, we produce a utopian space where a temporary, inclusive community can emerge. We also explore how our footbath performance can evoke a new experience of the Strandbad Tiefenbrunnen, reimagining the use of lake water for unconventional and dynamic purposes.

Date: Sunday 2.2.2025, 12:00–16:00, ongoing – join anytime.
Location: Outdoors, meeting point "Toter Fisch"; bad weather alternative: Grill Pavilion.

Perspectives and Perception: "Fussbad für alle" creates a communal space through playful interaction and collective care practices, allowing water to be experienced anew as a connecting element.

    • Die Lagune

      Smilla Diener

What would happen if a beaver dammed the Limmat until Bürkliplatz was underwater?

Alarms would go off, valuable things would be hoisted up, people would come out of their offices on Bahnhofstrasse, filming with their phones, and the fancy cars wouldn’t be equipped for an underwater Bürkliplatz; they are built for a dry Bürkliplatz with car watchers, and their engines would roar one last time, maybe bubbling something out of the radiator grill one by one. And then they would stop.

Smilla Diener reads the first part of the writing project "Die Lagune", which traces the water systems of a city in the context of climate change.

      Date: Sunday 2.2.2025, 14:00–14:30.
Location: In the Restaurant Pavilion. The number of places is limited. We recommend arriving early to secure a spot.

Perspectives and Perception: "Die Lagune" inspires critical awareness of the effects of climate change on the urban environment through poetic and provocative imagination.

    • Sea Signals Lake Noise

Irene Vögeli, Ben Kaczor, LB Honne, Tim Shaw

An artistic-scientific sound archive opens up for experiments. Over the years, around 50,000 hours of audio have been collected in the Arctic Sea as part of a climate research project—a vast noise with many unusual signals within it. While cameras and sensors continuously document, pickups simultaneously listen to the scientific equipment at work. How do research results emerge, and what does a marine biology experiment have to do with the precarious present? For Urban Waters, we will expand our interactive archive station with a live hydrophone—allowing visitors to dive into the underwater soundscapes of both the sea and Lake Zurich. Additionally, there will be two live sets by Hatari and LB Honne, as well as an audiowalk by Tim Shaw.

"Sea Signals Lake Noise" is part of the SNF-Agora project "Listening to Data Flows" by Hannes Rickli, based at ZHdK.

Date: Saturday 8.2.2025, 12:00–18:30 (Work Bench, Ongoing – Entry possible at any time), 14:00–16:00 (Audio Walk), 17:00–18:30 (Concert, Duration: 2 × 30 minutes).

    • Seh-Zugänge

      Rosa Zimmermann & Claudia Lombardi

How do we perceive the lake in everyday life? How could we create alternative encounters with the body of water? We explore familiar and learned patterns of seeing. Our perception often reflects the prevailing relationship, which remains exploitative and one-sided: humans view the lake as an apparently inexhaustible resource. Therefore, we attempt to decenter the human as the starting point. Together, we immerse ourselves in more-than-human perspectives and imagine the voices of the lake and the seagulls. What would they tell us? In the workshop, we encourage play and exploration. We will gather shared insights in a zine, allowing our thoughts to flow further.

      Date: Sunday 9.2.2025, 13:00–15:00.
Location: Outdoors, meeting point at the main entrance, register by email.
Information: The workshop will be held in German, with translation possible. Please dress warmly as we will be outdoors.

Perspectives and Perception: "Seh-Zugänge" promotes a new awareness of the complex relationship between humans and nature through interactive shifts in perspective and creative engagement.

    • Speaking Fluids

      Seçil Metin und Sonia Tcherepanov

“Speaking Fluids” will be an expression where artists explore ways of reflecting the soundscape and landscape of Lake Zurich through an electroacoustic live performance. The saxophone and electronics merge in an improvised context, influenced by the environment. The saxophone, sometimes gentle and sometimes explosive, brings the element of water to life, while the electronics reinforce the atmosphere with natural sounds—wind, rain, birdsong—from the surrounding nature. A soundscape of the lake reflects the flowing, unstoppable movement of water, stimulating a poetic reflection on nature and the environment in the midst of the cold winter city.

      Date: Sunday 9.2.2025, 14:00–14:20.
Location: Restaurant Pavilion. The number of places is limited. We recommend arriving early to secure a spot.

Perspectives and Perception: "Speaking Fluids" merges natural sounds and music into a poetic soundscape, taking the audience on an immersive journey and intensifying their perception of water and its surroundings.

    • Short Film Evening

      Where Does the Dream Begin?
      Neyen Pailamilla
As a Mapuche artist, I perceive rivers and bodies of water as living beings, equal to humans, with nature and humanity as parts of an interconnected network. Since I moved to Switzerland, I have sought ways to connect emotionally with the Swiss landscape and its history through performance and video. "Where Does the Dream Begin?" is a work that presents collaborations with the river Sihl through a dreamlike aesthetic seeking a spiritual connection with the river.

      Under the Ice
      Michael Kessler, David Oesch
In a melting glacier, a research team examines the ice to extract historical climate data. The drilling project stalls, and Dr. Sasha Sirkovsky is brought in. She discovers something unexpected: the ice cores not only reflect the history of the Earth but also hold echoes of Sasha's own past.

      Der Molchkongress
      Matthias Sahli, Immanuel Esser
Newly discovered talking giant salamanders have been exploited by humans for years as low-level labor and test subjects. On a nature-surrounded conference site, the Congress of Newts takes place, where participants gather to discuss the usability of these creatures. The short film is a loose adaptation of Karel Čapek’s "War with the Newts".

      Theater of Glass
      Chloe Kelly
This video-essay philosophises on the phenomenon of aquariums; from the first glass display cases in Victorian England, up until today’s 'entertainment-education' experiences at commercial aquariums and zoos. With the context of Bad-Tiefenbrunnen as a boundary space between the lake's under-water aquatic environment and the man-made city of Zurich, the work discusses the human act of displaying non-human ecosystems within urban architectures. The essay focuses on the human gaze upon the animal, and the technologies we use to gaze. Today, the word “transparency” is used as much metaphorically as it is used literally; the term is a supposed new 'value' of companies and governments. But what metaphors can we see in the transparent aquarium glass? Is the aquarium glass a boundary between two worlds; an honest reflection? Or is it just another means of illusion and voyeurism?

      Future Waves
Alissa Knopp, Alain Scherer, Raymond Frey
Five short films invite viewers to rethink water. How can adaptive relaxation spaces emerge on water? How would water move without gravity? Are invasive species in our waters a problem? And what is the value of the drinking water that surrounds us every day? These films pose questions, open up perspectives, and propose visionary ideas for the future. The project was created as part of the 5th semester module of the Bachelor in Industrial Design at ZHdK, led by Susanne Marti and Robert Wettstein.

      Date: Friday 14.2.2025, 17:30–19:00.
Location: Restaurant Pavilion. The number of places is limited. We recommend arriving early to secure a spot.

Perspectives and Perception: The short film evening opens new perspectives on water and the environment through artistic and experimental narrative forms.

    • Nass

      Cindy Ziegler & Norma Eggenberger

Wet. Saturated, dripping, damp, clammy, slippery, spongy, sticky, slimy, humid, hazy, shimmering.

We rely on liquid—on water. We get wet in various ways: out of fear, courage, or despair. Water sets us in motion, flows through our bodies, and sustains our lives.

Seven young women dive into the unknown, moist blue, reaching its depths and absorbing impressions that they process in their essays. Their words moisten dry throats and offer feminist perspectives that cast water in a new light. This reading will be intimate and honest. We immerse ourselves, and accompanied by soft tones, our words will resonate loudly.

      Date: Saturday 15.2.2025, 14:30–16:00.
Location: Restaurant Pavilion. The number of places is limited. We recommend arriving early to secure a spot.

    • Hidden Depths

      Sere Rivers

"Hidden Depths" explores the fleeting nature of water through the depiction of a puddle as a snapshot and metaphor. Water embodies change and transience—it flows, evaporates, appears, and disappears. Often overlooked, the puddle serves as a mirror connecting sky and earth, transforming impermanence into an act of reflection. By preserving this ephemeral state in bio-resin, the work reinterprets it artistically. It invites viewers to consciously appreciate the aesthetic presence of water in urban spaces and to reflect anew on its poetic and essential significance.

Perspectives and Perception: «Hidden Depths» preserves the transience of a puddle and invites reflection on the aesthetic and poetic significance of water in the urban space.

    • Seegras

      Oliver Brunko

Using artistic methods, Oliver Brunko portrays underwater worlds, diving down to seagrass beds, capturing photographs, videos, and audio recordings of the places he discovered. Along the way, he encountered plants, animals, stones, suspended particles, shells, sand, and sediment hidden beneath a constantly shifting layer of water. Floating in a liquid space surrounded by lake water offers a new perspective on one’s relationship with the surrounding environment and its interconnected systems. Through his images and sound installations, Oliver Brunko aims to inspire connections and discussions between familiar and unfamiliar visual and auditory spaces.

Perspectives and Perception: «Seegras» connects artistic representations of underwater worlds with sound installations, encouraging reflection on our relationship with water and nature from new perspectives.

    • Se la vita nell’acqua

      Valentina Poncioni

The nature of water holds the life of a person in this work, but it is the life of this person that imbues with meaning a piece of fabric immersed in water. Cyanotype mediates this relationship between nature and the human being, involving water both in the artistic process and in the content. The work expresses the possibility of restoring a primitive, protective, and meditative state to the life of a person, as if they had not yet been exposed to the experiences and contexts that caused their end. Immersed in water, we find a neutral state that anticipates life and the development of its experiences, offering the opportunity to choose differently. Hence the title of the work: If Life in Water.

Perspectives and Perception: «Se la vita nell'acqua» portrays the deeply rooted connection between water and humans and reflects the possibility of a primordial, untouched state.

    • Sub-Merged: Paravent for Unwanted Glances

      Arden Surdam

Sub-Merged: Paravent for Unwanted Glances (unerwünschten Blicken) is a site-specific sculpture featuring UV images printed on recycled aluminum sheets. The artwork, mounted on an articulated steel frame, mimics the structure of a traditional dressing screen or paravent, formerly used as bade changing partitions. The piece juxtaposes archival photographs documenting Swiss water sites with contemporary still lifes shot in the artist’s studio. The images are intended to bring awareness to the continued problem of water contamination, from microplastics to ammunition dumping in lakes and rivers. Referencing artists like Bruce Nauman and his iconic photograph series of his San Francisco Bay explosions, the sculpture employs art history to illustrate the ongoing crisis afflicting both environmental and social communities that rely on water sources.

With the help of specialists like geologist Dr. Marcos Buser, the sculpture shows Switzerland’s remarkable natural resources while simultaneously demonstrating the harms of material deregulation. Over the exhibition period, the aluminum surfaces will oxidize, generating a material transformation which parallels those of the submerged munitions. Through this evolving dialogue between material decay and environmental documentation, Sub-Merged serves as both witness and warning to the fragility of our water systems.

Perspectives and Perception: «Sub-Merged» combines historical and contemporary visual imagery to highlight the threat of water pollution, while the sculpture depicts the degradation of resources and water over time.

    • Toter Fisch

      Manu Ueltschi

The 180 cm long fish lies lifeless on the ground, having lost the battle for survival. Algae cling to it—or is it its intestines spilling out of the body? The assumption of always having water is gone. The fish illustrates the consequences of a world without water. If it’s not dried-up bodies of water, as seen the year before last, it could be floods, like those experienced in many places last year. If we had floods here, another animal species might replace the fish. The fish symbolizes all living beings.

Perspectives and Perception: «Toter Fisch» symbolizes the impacts of water scarcity and extreme weather events, representing the threat posed by climate change to all living beings.

    • unCURTAINtides

      Manuel Wirth

Two people meet. They stand on opposite sides of a curtain, facing each other. They listen—stories of and about water. As they do, they are invited to imagine new worlds and alter the curtain. Their fingers glide over the fabric, shaping reality as they touch it. They sense. The other side responds, either cooperating or resisting. They observe as the other reality blends with their own. Finally, they exchange their thoughts—sharing and intertwining impressions of what they have heard, touched, felt, and observed.

Perspectives and Perception: «unCURTAINtides» creates a space through an interactive curtain where two people share their perceptions of water, blurring the boundaries between their own and others' realities.

    • Zürcher Badis

      Michael Tulio

The work "Zürcher Badis" is a swimwear collection featuring various swim shorts and bikinis that abstractly depict Zurich’s lakes and rivers. These are the waters where we swim in summer—and some even in winter. When we swim, we immerse ourselves completely in their water, in their essence. We take it for granted that we can refresh ourselves in the nearest river or lake, yet swimmable waters are not a given worldwide. "Zürcher Badis" suggests that our rivers and lakes are our true swimming destinations. They are prominently displayed as decorations on the swimwear. Let’s continue to care for our waters so we can enjoy refreshing swims in them for years to come!

Perspectives and Perception: «Zürcher Badis» presents abstracted Zurich waters on swimwear, encouraging reflection on the care of our water bodies and their significance for swimming.

    • Zweimal um die Ecke

      Stephanie Bär

Go outside, walk, turn the corner, stop, drink. Keep going, stroll, observe, photograph. Capture, print, take apart, and reassemble. This project is dedicated to Zurich’s fountains—everyday objects whose shapes and forms shape the urban space. The starting point is photographs, transferred onto fabric using cyanotype, fragmented, and rearranged. An image emerges that only becomes visible through washing. Water is not just the subject but also part of the process. And in the end, there is blue.

Perspectives and Perception: «Rausgehen, laufen, um die Ecke gehen…» encourages a fresh look at Zurich’s everyday fountains and invites reflection on the connection between water, memory, and the city.
