ZORA I JA (Serbocroatian for “ZORA AND I”) is an embroidery label that is reinterpreting traditional embroidery in a contemporary context and incorporating embroidery patterns into stitch patterns. The crosstitch technique “Zmijanjski Vez” is part of the (intangible) UNESCO cultural heritage of Bosnia. These blue threads on white linen are the basis of Zmijanje embroidery. The prevailing ornaments in Zmijanje embroidery are stylized plant shapes and symmetrically occurring geometric shapes. The motif of the traditional folk dance “Kolo” often occurs in the form of a rhomb (diamond) on Zmijanje embroidery. The “Kolo” is a symbol of the sky, of circular movements (flow of life), and is one of the symbols of divinity. On the other hand, the rhomb is a feminine symbol; it represents the female sex and fertility. This tradition is respected and protected, and passed on to the younger generation. It stands for creativity, social equality and diversity. Sandra Seb is interested in breaking new ground and placing a tradition in the current societal context without losing sight of or even forgetting the core and significance of its origin in the process. The artist is hoping to establish a respectful connection between tradition and the modern world.
