In this model the effects of the interaction between coloured surfaces and the shadows cast by them are examined. A slanted cardboard surface was illuminated by a white light (incandescent bulb) and a colour light (LED) from various angles. Especially fascinating is the fact that the two shadows – coloured and dyed – optically bind together with the cardboard surface and are perceived as a three-dimensional coloured object. This illusion was varied, broken down and recreated through specific modifications of the light colour and its complementary shadow colour.
The purpose of these experiments was to find out which spatial arrangement and which colour of lights and materials yielded the illusion most clearly. Crucial for this illusion was the interaction between the intensity of the coloured and white light. Yet the surface properties and colours of the model and of the cardboard surface also contributed to the effect.
