In the Beginning tells the story of a child listening to his grandfather's stories from the past. He tells this story in combination with the black-and-white drawings from the picture book “Grübeln macht mich lange das” (Brooding Makes Me Long). This creates a spatial reception of the narration and an associative interplay between two different narrative formats.
“The blue mountains are steep and rocky. The house is wooden, but well lined. It keeps the warmth of the fire inside. Sheep are sent out onto the slopes during the day, and the children help and play inside. There are berries growing high up between the rocks. Golden eagles fly up there, and the only pine tree stands in the wind. It holds the rocks together. The grandfather tells the children about his memories from a time when he rode a bike, ate pomegranates, and the mountains were not yet there. He advises the children to find a flat plain so they can ride their bikes. But the
children are puzzled. There are no flat plains and no pomegranates in the mountains. So the child sets off. Up to the golden eagle families, to travel through the air over the mountains.” (Introductory text in the beginning, Lara Wedekind, 2025)
