It is virtually impossible to confine light. It escapes through the smallest cracks and radiates into neighbouring dark areas. I observed the indirect effects of a brightly lit room on an adja- cent dark space and explored the transitions and forms of light that appear along these boundaries. I positioned myself in the dark area in order to perceive the tonal gradations of light more accurately. These light-to-dark transitions can be easily replicated and studied with the aid of box models.
I then tried to express my observations in painting. I painted from memory and my imagination. The most difficult aspect was achieving a credible depiction of light. I experimented with different painting techniques and materials in order to discover possible ways of painting light. The best results were achieved with paint composed of dark pigments and a generous appli- cation of linseed-oil varnish. I dabbed this oily, crumbly paint with a hard, flayed brush layer by layer onto highly absorbent, light-coloured cardboard. The shaded areas were done with the paint, the light was depicted by leaving parts of the surface unpainted.
