Resisting in Art [ZHdK-AVINA Fonds, 2017]

    Bachelor Fine Arts

Resisting in Art,Tina Omayemi Reden,Tina Reden

"My country is on my shoulder and the remains of the land are in the body of the Arabs. My heart is on a stone, and the stone is free." – Bahia, an artist from Cairo

"With the revolution came hope and I was very powerful." – Jacqueline, an artist from Cairo

Because art can be experienced by the senses at every level, it has a cathartic and emotive power and the potential to intervene in political events, seize on them and change them. Directly. Physically. How do we as artists address the political climate in which we live, which surrounds our artistic work? How can we generate effective and affective experiences which can lead to social change? What happens to an artist's work and to the artistic process in a precarious political climate such as there is in Cairo? The research examines the boundary between art and activism in Cairo, between the political and the private.
